Women’s Open Winner – Shinobi Submission Grappling Championship

Tarika Modi from Mikes Martial Arts delivered a stellar performance at the Shinobi Submission Grappling Championship, conquering the Women’s Open Category after besting three determined opponents, including a State Grappling Champion. She impressed with a mix of patience, composure, and steady technical Jiu-Jitsu — winning her opening match on points and the remaining ones by submission.

Coach’s Note

“Tarika’s journey is a reflection of what we value at Mike’s Martial Arts — consistency, discipline, and respect for the art. She has shown that showing up every day, putting in the effort, and trusting the process can yield incredible results. This win is not just hers, but also a proud moment for her teammates, coaches, and the entire dojo family. We look forward to seeing her grow even further.”

Excerpts from a brief interview with Tarika and what she had to say:

1. Big Win: How did it feel to win the Shinobi Submission Grappling Championship?

"I am grateful for this win because it definitely boosts my confidence and also helps me evaluate my skills with other players who I have never rolled with. It's a different challenge altogether, which is also empowering."

2. Preparation: We understand that you have been training for about one and a half years. So what was it like facing some tough opponents?

"I have been training Jiu-Jitsu for about 18 months now. What has really helped me make some progress in this form of martial art is to constantly show up and keep trying techniques over and over again. Sensei also encourages us to maintain that discipline and keeps pushing us to participate in tournaments to get the exposure which can help us evaluate ourselves and test our limits."

3. Key Moment: Was there a turning point or a tough match that really tested you?

"The support that Sensei showed and the cornering by him and my other coach was really helpful in keeping my spirit up. The encouragement that a player can get from their team is crucial when we are on the mat. It helped me stay grounded and focused and I am thankful for that."

4. Support System: How have your coaches, training partners and family helped you reach this milestone?

*"Of course, the players that I fought were highly skilled themselves and gave a tough competition. All of them gave me a different kind of challenge that definitely required me to modify my approach as the match continued. And like I said, the cornering provided by Sensei and Lucky sir was definitely helpful. They keep helping us understand our strengths and encourage us to work around the areas where we fall short.

The best part about training is that it has never been rigid. The coaches understand that no one shoe will fit all. They help us modify the techniques according to our skill levels and that has been a game changer.

Along with the coaches and Sensei, I do feel that the training partners also play a major role in determining our experience on the mat. Our dojo always promotes safety and rolling that doesn’t hurt or injure anyone but at the same time helps us try the techniques with minimum to maximum resistance.

I would not want to leave out the support that my parents show towards my liking of martial arts. I am sure it takes a lot of courage from them too because martial arts does come with a stigma that one will get beaten up every time that they go to class. Because they have been open-minded about my journey in this area, it adds as an advantage and helps me focus on things which are important."*

5. Looking Ahead: What's next for you in martial arts and what message would you like to share with the younger students?

"My goal is simple. Just show up and practice what is being taught in class. It includes Sensei, coaches and every training partner because each roll comes with a lot of learning. I also look forward to participating in more championships as and when possible, so let's see what comes up next."

West Bengal Kickboxing Championship 2025

On 30–31 August 2025, the West Bengal State Kickboxing Championship was held at the Jadavpur University Open Air Stadium, organized by the Bengal Kickboxing Association (India)

Representing Mike’s Martial Arts, two of its home-grown fighters emerged as state champions after a series of fiercely contested bouts:

Sneha Samanta — Under 56 kg, Low Kick

Sneha Samanta delivered a powerful and tenacious performance in the under 56 kg Low Kick division. Her path to the title was marked by tightly contested bouts, where she had to dig deep and display both technical skill and resilience to overcome her opponents. Her victory is a testament to her training, strategic planning, and fighting spirit.

Kushan Sethia — Under 16, Light Contact

In the under-16 Light Contact category, Kushan Sethia also rose to the occasion. Facing several tough adversaries throughout the competition, Kushan’s matches were hard-fought and closely matched. In the end, he emerged victorious and secured the state championship title in his age class.

We took this moment to interview Sneha Samanta and see what drives a winner. Here is what she had to say:

1. Big Win: How did it feel to win the West Bengal State Kickboxing Championship and what does this achievement mean to you?

It felt amazing. This was my very first low-kick championship, so stepping into a slightly different rule set was both challenging and exciting. Winning it felt like opening a new door—another opportunity for me to grow as a martial artist.

For me, this achievement means that my training is on the right track. It has given me a lot of confidence and reassured me that the years of hard work I’ve put into karate are translating well into other combat sports too.

2. Preparation: We understand that you are not a kickboxer but a Kyokushin Karate Fighter. So how did you prepare—both in training and mentally—for this competition?

My foundation in kicking techniques comes from years of Kyokushin Karate training. For the boxing aspect, I joined a boxing class for two months to sharpen my hands, footwork, and guard. Alongside that, I worked consistently on cardio, strength, endurance, and stamina.

The mindset I carry into tournaments was built through my last five years of competition experience; I just had to apply it in a slightly different arena.

3. Key Moment: Was there a turning point or a tough match during the event that really tested you?

The semifinal was the toughest. My opponent’s style was very different from mine— It forced me out of my comfort zone. For a moment, I felt like the match might be slipping away, but I managed to adapt to her rhythm just in time. That fight tested not just my technique but also my composure and ability to think under pressure. Looking back, that was the match that gave me the most growth.

4. Support System: How have your coaches, training partners, and family helped you reach this milestone?

Honestly, I couldn’t have done this without them. My coach have been incredible—he modified my training routine to suit the demands of kickboxing, arranged extra sessions, and kept pushing me to fine-tune the small details. My training partners are the reason I can still fight at 29 while balancing a full-time job. They’ve given me the intensity and realism I needed in every sparring session.

5. Looking Ahead: What’s next for you in martial arts, and what message would you like to share with younger students?

The next milestone for me is the World Cup Full Contact Karate Championship in Japan this November. It’s a huge stage, and I’m preparing with everything I have. My message to the younger students is simple: hard work beats talent. If you put your heart into training, stay disciplined, and refuse to give up, you’ll surprise yourself with what you’re capable of. No matter what your challenges and the outcome are, you’ll never regret the effort you put in.
